Shawn Colvin - I Don't Know Why
I think it's quite fitting to start this "reminiscence" blog with the the song that inspired the tagline of this blog. I first heard this song probably sometime in 2002. I guess it started with me being bored listening to the local radio stations because they talked too much. I mean, if I want to listen to talk radio, then I'd tune in to talk radio! And apart from that, if you tuned in to the same station the whole day, you would listen to the same songs probably 5 times in a day. I got so bored of it, so I decided to listen to Internet radio. First it started with listening to some of US radio stations, mostly just for remembrance. Then I found LaunchCast which allowed you to pick the artists and songs that you like to listen to, and they would also play other artists and songs that you might be interested in too. And that's how I was introduced to this song. I've heard of Shawn Colvin before because when I was in the States, her song "Sunny Came Home" was a hit, probably back in 1997, but I've never heard of her before then. When I heard this song, I looked it up and apparently it's from her older album.
Apart from the beautiful melody, the thing that really got me is the lyrics.
I don't know whyBut apart from all that, this song also reminds me of the time I introduced it to someone. I guess I never really paid that much attention to the lyrics until I forwarded it to someone and that person mentioned that it has beautiful lyrics. It described how you can be in love with someone and sometimes not really knowing the reason why.
The sky is so blue
And I don't know why
I'm so in love with you
But if there were no music
Then I would not get through
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
But somewhere dreams come true
And I don't know where
But there will be a place for you
And every time you look that way
I would lay down my life for you
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
But some are going to make you cry
And I don't know how
But I will get you by, I will try
They're not trying to cause you pain
They're just afraid of loving you
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
The trees grow so tall
And I don't know why
I don't know anything at all
But if there were no music
Then I would not get through
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
