You Can Sleep While I Drive & Foolish Games

Melissa Etheridge & Jewel - You Can Sleep While I Drive & Foolish Games

For this double feature, I picked this performance from VH1 Duets with Melissa Etheridge. I think this was from 1994. Jewel was pretty new at that time, and the first time I've heard of Melissa Etheridge was from the song "Come To My Window". Apparently she's been around, too bad she's not well known back home. I love the lyrics for both songs. I always imagine myself driving somewhere, with someone, while listening to "You Can Sleep While I Drive". But then "Foolish Games" kinda brings me back to reality.
You Can Sleep While I Drive
Come on baby let's get out of this town
I got a full tank of gas with the top rolled down
There's a chill in my bones
I don't want to be left alone
So baby you can sleep while I drive
I'll pack my bag and load up my guitar
In my pocket I'll carry my harp
I got some money I saved
Enough to get underway
And baby you can sleep while I drive

We'll go through Tucson up to Santa Fe
And Barbara in Nashville says we're welcome to stay
I'll buy you glasses in Texas a hat from New Orleans
In the morning you can tell me your dreams

You know I've seen it before
This mist that covers your eyes
You've been looking for something
That's not in your life
My intentions are true
Won't you take me with you
And baby you can sleep while I drive

Oh is it other arms you want to
Hold you the stranger
The lover you're free
Can't you get that with me

Come on baby let's get out of this town
I got a full tank of gas with the top rolled down
If you won't take me with you
I'll go before night is through
And baby you can sleep while I drive

Foolish Games
You took your coat off and stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather

Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees

These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar
You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
So I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line I must've gone off track with you
Well, excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself

These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You took your coat off
Stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that

Useless Desires

Patty Griffin - Useless Desires

Unfortunately I've never heard of Patty Griffin the whole time I was living in the States. I actually discovered her through LaunchCast because it played songs from other artists that I might like. I think the first song that made me notice her was "Rain". It's such a beautiful song. At some point I discovered this song and I can't stop listening to it at some point. The title caught my attention and the lyrics speak so true.
Say goodbye to the old street
That never cared much for you anyway
Different-colored doorways
You thought would let you in one day
Goodbye to the old bus stop, frozen and waiting
Weekend edition has this town way overrated

Walk across a baseball field
The grass has turned to straw
A flock of birds tries to fly away from where you are
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye old friend
I can't make you stay
I can't spend another ten years
Wishing you would anyway

And the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires

Every day I take a bitter pill that gets me on my way
For the little aches and pains
The ones I have from day to day
To help me think a little less about the things I miss
To help me not to wonder how I ended up like this

Walk down to the railroad track and ride a rusty train
With a million other faces I shoot through the city veins
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye old friend
You wanted to be free
Somewhere beyond the bitter end is where I want to be

And the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires

Say goodbye to the old building
That never tried to know your name
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye old friend
You won't be seeing me again
Goodbye to all the windowpanes shining in the sun
Like diamonds on a winter day
Goodbye, goodbye to everyone

How the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire
Burns the last of the day down
And I'm the last one hangin' around
Waiting on a train track, and the train never comes back
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires
At that time, I was still too consumed by my 'useless desire'. This song's depressing, which made me even more depressed, but I do like it that way. Every time I heard it, I felt like going somewhere and just be lost.
