You Can Sleep While I Drive & Foolish Games

Melissa Etheridge & Jewel - You Can Sleep While I Drive & Foolish Games

For this double feature, I picked this performance from VH1 Duets with Melissa Etheridge. I think this was from 1994. Jewel was pretty new at that time, and the first time I've heard of Melissa Etheridge was from the song "Come To My Window". Apparently she's been around, too bad she's not well known back home. I love the lyrics for both songs. I always imagine myself driving somewhere, with someone, while listening to "You Can Sleep While I Drive". But then "Foolish Games" kinda brings me back to reality.
You Can Sleep While I Drive
Come on baby let's get out of this town
I got a full tank of gas with the top rolled down
There's a chill in my bones
I don't want to be left alone
So baby you can sleep while I drive
I'll pack my bag and load up my guitar
In my pocket I'll carry my harp
I got some money I saved
Enough to get underway
And baby you can sleep while I drive

We'll go through Tucson up to Santa Fe
And Barbara in Nashville says we're welcome to stay
I'll buy you glasses in Texas a hat from New Orleans
In the morning you can tell me your dreams

You know I've seen it before
This mist that covers your eyes
You've been looking for something
That's not in your life
My intentions are true
Won't you take me with you
And baby you can sleep while I drive

Oh is it other arms you want to
Hold you the stranger
The lover you're free
Can't you get that with me

Come on baby let's get out of this town
I got a full tank of gas with the top rolled down
If you won't take me with you
I'll go before night is through
And baby you can sleep while I drive

Foolish Games
You took your coat off and stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather

Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees

These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar
You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
So I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line I must've gone off track with you
Well, excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself

These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You took your coat off
Stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that

Useless Desires

Patty Griffin - Useless Desires

Unfortunately I've never heard of Patty Griffin the whole time I was living in the States. I actually discovered her through LaunchCast because it played songs from other artists that I might like. I think the first song that made me notice her was "Rain". It's such a beautiful song. At some point I discovered this song and I can't stop listening to it at some point. The title caught my attention and the lyrics speak so true.
Say goodbye to the old street
That never cared much for you anyway
Different-colored doorways
You thought would let you in one day
Goodbye to the old bus stop, frozen and waiting
Weekend edition has this town way overrated

Walk across a baseball field
The grass has turned to straw
A flock of birds tries to fly away from where you are
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye old friend
I can't make you stay
I can't spend another ten years
Wishing you would anyway

And the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires

Every day I take a bitter pill that gets me on my way
For the little aches and pains
The ones I have from day to day
To help me think a little less about the things I miss
To help me not to wonder how I ended up like this

Walk down to the railroad track and ride a rusty train
With a million other faces I shoot through the city veins
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye old friend
You wanted to be free
Somewhere beyond the bitter end is where I want to be

And the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires

Say goodbye to the old building
That never tried to know your name
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye old friend
You won't be seeing me again
Goodbye to all the windowpanes shining in the sun
Like diamonds on a winter day
Goodbye, goodbye to everyone

How the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire
Burns the last of the day down
And I'm the last one hangin' around
Waiting on a train track, and the train never comes back
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires
At that time, I was still too consumed by my 'useless desire'. This song's depressing, which made me even more depressed, but I do like it that way. Every time I heard it, I felt like going somewhere and just be lost.

Again

Janet Jackson - Again

This song reminded me of my time in Indiana. I think I remember Abang Haris saying that he loved this song because it reminded him of his ex. I remember Arnie loved the video clip because the guy has beautiful eyes, and this was way before he became Warrick in CSI. I loved it then because the song was one melodious tune, with no bridge, and it's pretty much focused on the piano and her voice. She really did have a good voice here. I love it now because after all these years, I know if this happens to me, I will fall...again.

I heard from a friend today
And she said you were in town
Suddenly the memories came back to me in my mind

How can I be strong I've asked myself
Time and time I've said
That I'll never fall in love with you again

A wounded heart you gave,
My soul you took away
Good intentions you had many,
I know you did
I come from a place that hurts,
an' God knows how I've cried
And I never want to return
Never fall again

Making love to you oh it felt so good and

Oh so right
How can I be strong I've asked myself
Time and time I've said
That I'll never fall in love with you again

So here we are alone again,
Didn't think it'd come to this
And to know it all began
With just a little kiss
I've come too close to happiness,
To have it swept away
Don't think I can take the pain
Never fall again

Kinda late in the game
And my heart is in your hands
Don't you stand there and then tell me
You love me
Then leave again
'Cause I'm falling in love with you again

Hold me, hold me

Don't ever let me go
Say it just one time
Say you love me
God knows I do love you again

Manisnya Senyumanmu

Elite - Manisnya SenyumanMu

Sure they kinda sound like Minnie Mouse on helium, and this video clip's really bad. Like Hello! What kind of dance moves were those?! But I do love this song, mostly for the simple upbeat sound and for the lyrics. It's saying just how sweet the smile of the other person is, and it makes you want to smile too. Yeah, I do think of someone when I listen to this song. That person really does have a sweet smile, the kind that enraptures you, takes you out of reality and confuses the hell out of you. So, I'm not sure it's the kind of smile you do want to see that often :-)

Oh manisnya, manisnya senyumanmu

Ku rasa...satu dunia sudah mengerti perasaan ku ini

Mengapa oh! mengapa takkan kau sedar ku mendamba
Ataupun...dikau sengaja diam berpura memendam rahsia
Segeralah oh! segera ku tahu kau hanya bermain masa

Semakin sering kita bertemu
Semakin terpaut rasa cintaku
Hari demi hari ku tetap menanti
Namun malu mula langkah pertama

Mata bertentang mata adakah kau terasa
Cinta kian memekar dihati kita
Kau istimewa paling utama yang satu
Betapa manisnya senyumanmu
Debaran penuh makna kelu tidak terkata
Sering kali terjadi bila kau disisi
Namun yang pasti membuat ku jatuh hati
Oh! manisnya, manisnya senyumanmu

Pabila aku terdengar
Lagu cinta ku terkenang pada mu
Aku merindu oh! merindu
Senyumanmu yang menawan kalbu

Semakin sering kita bertemu
Semakin terpaut hatiku padamu
Jika kau pun juga rasa yang ku rasa
Apa yang kau pinta katakan saja

Mata bertentang mata adakah kau terasa
Cinta kian memekar dihati kita
Kau istimewa paling utama yang satu
Betapa manisnya senyumanmu
Debaran penuh makna kelu tidak terkata
Sering kali terjadi bila kau disisi
Namun yang pasti membuat ku jatuh hati
Oh! manisnya, manisnya senyumanmu

The Scientist

Coldplay - The Scientist

This is my favorite Coldplay's song. "Yellow" used to be it, but this one just speaks from the heart. Part of the lyrics spoke of what I felt throughout the relationship, some for during and some for after. Unfortunately this song was tainted a bit because of its association with someone else, someone that really infuriated me, and that made me stopped listening to it for almost 5 years, but then now I don't mind listening to it again. I just focused on what this song meant for me.

Come up to meet you
Tell you I'm sorry

You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you

Tell you I've set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles
Coming up tails

Heads on the science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing
At numbers and figures

Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Oh tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I’m going back to the start
I still wish I can go back to the start.

Silver Springs

Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs

I remember watching this video clip in VH1 with Amy and we both loved the emotions that Stevie Nicks displayed in it. Of course we both had never heard of "Silver Springs" before, and apparently it was an old Mac song. And we both didn't know too that Stevie and Lindsey was involved before. But even without knowing all of that, by just watching this clip, you feel like you can get the whole story of their torrid romance.
You could be my silver spring
Blue green colors flashing
I would be your only dream
Your shining autumn ocean crashing
And did you say she was pretty?
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby I don't want to know

I begin not to love you
Turn 'round see me running
I said I loved you years ago
Tell myself you never loved me, no
And did you say she was pretty?
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby I don't want to know

And can you tell me it was worth it?
Really I don't want to know

Time casts a spell on you
But you won't forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me

I'll follow you down
'Till the sound of my voice will haunt you
You'll never get away from the sound

Of the woman that loves you

I'll follow you down
'Till the sound of my voice will haunt you
(Was I just a fool)
You'll never get away from the sound
Of the woman that loves you
(Was I just a fool)
I'll follow you down
'Till the sound of my voice will haunt you
(Give me just a chance)
You'll never get away from the sound
Of the woman that loves you

You could be my silver spring
My blue green colors flashing
My favorite part of this song was towards the end when she said "give me just a chance".

I See Your Smile

Gloria Estefan - I See Your Smile

I remember that I first heard this song in the States, probably around 1996/97. I tend to listen to this adult contemporary radio station at night. They would play sad sappy songs and I love to stop whatever I was doing and just listened to the songs, not that I can relate to the songs that much at that time. I can't remember whether I've ever seen this video clip on VH1, it's a pretty cheesy clip, esp with that ending. But I still love the song. It wasn't really dedicated to anyone before, but now when I heard this song, I tend to think of one person that I love to see the smile.
I, get a little tongue twisted
Every time I talk to you
When I see you
And I'm so glad that you just missed it
The way I stared to memorize your face
To kiss you in my mind
Love you all the time
'cause when I close my eyes
I still can see your smile
It's bright enough to light my life
Out of my darkest hour
Please believe it's true
When I tell you I love you

I've taken too many chances
Searching for the truth in love
That's in my heart
Tell me if I made the wrong advances
Tell me if I've made you feel ashamed
'cause I know I have to do this
Would you hold my hand right through it
'cause when I close my eyes
I still can see your smile
It's bright enough to light my life
Out of my darkest hour
Please believe it's true
When I tell you I love you

I had to let you know
Just what would happen
Yes, I had to let you know the truth
I know I've got to do this
Would you hold my hand right through it
Would you
'cause when I close my eyes
I still can see your smile
It's bright enough to light my life
Out of my darkest hour
Please believe it's true
When I tell you I love you
I know now this is true
When I tell you I love you
I love when it goes to the second verse and the drum beat begins, and also when you can hear the violins.
